The Houston Cougars came out of the gates swinging this recruiting cycle, and the results are showing up on the scoreboard. Willie Fritz and his staff landed seven verbal commitments in a single weekend, catapulting Houston to No. 25 in the 247Sports Team Recruiting Rankings for the 2027 class. Let that sink in.
The Coogs have knocked the SEC flagship Texas Longhorns, sitting at No. 26 with 11 commits, off the local perch and are nipping at Texas Tech's heels at No. 24. Houston has the momentum, the mission, and this week, the visitors. Everything points toward another explosive weekend in the Energy Corridor.
The Blue Chipper in the Backyard
If there is one recruitment that has the entire state holding its breath, it belongs to Landen William-Callis. The Richmond Randle running back isn't just the most coveted prospect in Houston's backyard—he may be the most dynamic back in the entire 2027 class, nationally. And somehow, this recruitment has stayed quieter than it has any right to be.

The numbers are staggering, but statistics alone don't tell the story of William-Callis. He plays at a different speed than everyone else on the field. His initial acceleration and top-end gear sit at the apex of the 2027 running back class, and his track credentials back every bit of it.
What separates him further is football intelligence: he sees lanes before they open, manipulates his speed to honor his blockers, and carries a natural low center of gravity that lets him absorb glancing contact and play significantly bigger than his listed dimensions suggest.
Fresh off an official visit to Oregon, William-Callis has no shortage of heavy hitters in pursuit. But sources connected to every program in this race tell the same story: everyone believes they're in good shape. That's the nature of a recruitment this elite.
For Houston, the pitch is compelling and deeply personal: instant impact from day one, a chance to play in front of family, and the opportunity to be the face of a program ascending in real time. The Coogs will not back down from this one nor should they. It's a long way to December.
This Week's Visitors
Two of Houston's 2027 commits will be on campus to help close the deal: Cy Ranch quarterback Braden Baker and Newton running back KJ Porter. That peer-to-peer dynamic is one of the most underrated weapons in any program's recruiting arsenal.
Marvin Joseph
3-Star Safety • Baton Rouge Central (LA)
The Bayou-to-Bayou pipeline continues to flow with the arrival of Baton Rouge Central safety Marvin Joseph. As Fritz and his staff have quietly built relationships down I-10 into Louisiana, Joseph represents one of the more intriguing additions to this visit weekend. He comes in with fresh eyes and a direct focus on what matters to him most—connection. Before kicking off his official visit, Joseph talked with us at Coogs 365 Sports:
"I’m looking forward to meeting all the coaches and getting into the environment and seeing what they’re all about and also relationships."
That's exactly the kind of mindset that should give Houston encouragement. When a prospect talks about relationships first, it means the staff has already done the foundational work. It also doesn't hurt that his teammate at Baton Rouge Central and Houston commit Marcus Watson Jr. also adds another strong relationship ahead of his official.
Now it's time to bring it home.
3-Star Safety • Archbishop Shaw (LA)
If Joseph is a first-time visitor soaking in the atmosphere, Rontrae Carter, who goes by "Shark," a nickname that tells you something about how the young man plays the game, is a repeat visitor who knows exactly what he's returning to. The Archbishop Shaw standout has already been to campus, already knows the coaches, and this weekend is less about introduction and more about deepening the bond.
Carter is enthusiastic about the return trip in a way that carries real weight:
"Excited to get back to H-Town and be around the program again. Looking forward to seeing the coaches and hanging out with the players. Also looking forward to building a deeper bond with the coaches."
Prospects who are excited to come back are the ones that close. Watch this one closely.
Markez Davis
3-Star ATH • Northwest (LA)
Rounding out a compelling trio of Louisiana prospects is Markez Davis, the versatile athlete out of Northwest. Davis adds yet another chapter to the Bayou-to-Bayou story Fritz is actively writing this cycle.
His athletic profile gives Houston's coaching staff options—the kind of Swiss-Army-knife prospect that modern Big 12 offenses and defenses are built around. Davis has been quieter in his recruitment than the two safeties ahead of him on this visit weekend, but that makes his trip to Houston no less significant.
"I’m looking for a 2nd family; I feel comfortable about the environment."
Fritz has consistently shown an ability to identify and land multi-positional athletes out of Louisiana, and Davis fits that mold well. Keep an eye on which side of the ball Houston is pitching him hardest on—that could tell you a lot about where the staff sees the ceiling.
Aidan Ray
3-Star OT • Plano West (TX)
Houston has made no secret about wanting to fortify the trenches in this cycle, and Aidan Ray is very much a part of that vision. The Plano West offensive tackle checks in as one of the more physically imposing prospects on this visit weekend, and his presence in H-Town signals that
Fritz isn't just loading up on skill positions he's trying to win up front. Offensive line recruiting is the kind of work that doesn't get the headlines, but it wins championships. Ray fits the profile of the prototypical Big 12-ready tackle: length, athleticism, and the kind of frame that projects beautifully at the next level with upside still ahead. If Houston can land Ray alongside the big men they've already committed, the foundation in the trenches starts to look formidable in a hurry.
Logan Debose
3-Star CB • St. Thomas, Houston (TX)
There's something poetic about a Houston kid potentially suiting up for the Cougars, and Logan Debose, the cornerback out of St. Thomas, represents exactly that kind of opportunity. He's in the Coogs' backyard, he can see what the program is building firsthand, and the appeal of staying home while playing for a team with legitimate Big 12 aspirations is real.
Debose is the type of corner Houston's defensive backs coach can develop quick-twitch athleticism, competitive instincts, and the kind of pride that comes with playing close to home in front of family every week. A commitment from Debose wouldn't just fill a need; it would send a message about Houston's ability to lock down its own city with rising young talent.
Prince Washington (FLIP WATCH)
3-Star CB • Houston, Texas • Currently committed to Colorado
Every recruiting season has its marquee flip storyline, and in Houston's 2027 class, Prince Washington is that storyline. The Houston-native cornerback is verbally committed to Colorado, but his return to campus this weekend speaks volumes.
When a prospect already holding a commitment makes an official visit to another program, it is never a casual social call. Washington knows Houston. Houston knows Washington. The Coogs have clearly done enough to earn a second look, and with the program's upward trajectory on full display this week, the optics of committing to a rising Big 12 program close to home versus a Colorado program far from everything familiar is a compelling argument.
Flips aren't impossible—they're just a long way to December. And this one is absolutely worth watching.
The Bayou-to-Bayou pipeline is real, the trenches are getting bigger, and the secondary is becoming a priority—all pillars of a program being built to last. Willie Fritz has made no secret of his philosophy: build it in your backyard first, then extend the reach. This week, with plenty of top talent on campus and two committed players selling the vision alongside the staff, Houston has every tool it needs to close strong.
Expect commitments before the weekend ends. The Coogs are cooking, and the kitchen just got very, very crowded, and Coogs 365 Sports has you covered with all the intel.
