Some receivers catch footballs. Others catch moments. Saturday at TDECU Stadium, in front of 42,544 fans, the fourth-largest crowd in the building’s history, Houston’s Amare Thomas caught both.
Seven receptions. 126 yards. Two touchdowns, one of them on fourth down, when the whole afternoon rested on a single throw and a single pair of hands. Houston beat No. 18 Oklahoma State 35-32, and the Panini Senior Bowl named Thomas its Senior Offensive Player of the Week. The award is nice. The tape is better.

A fourth down leaves no room for a next play to fix it. There is the call, the route, the throw and the catch. Thomas, a senior who could have been content in the background of a good offense, stepped to the front of it.
The film-room view
A fourth-down touchdown is never really about fourth down. It’s about the snaps before it: a receiver who wins early so he’s trusted late, who runs the same disciplined route in the first quarter that he runs with the game on the line. Quarterbacks throw to the men they believe in. Thomas has spent a career earning that belief, and he cashed it in when it counted.
It shows in the numbers. Houston piled up 505 yards of total offense, its third 500-yard game this season. A defense that must account for one dependable target can survive. One that must account for two starts bleeding.
Two for the price of one
Houston had two. Fifth-year receiver Trent Walker finished with seven catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. Both Thomas and Walker cleared 100 yards, a first for a Cougars duo since Nov. 5, 2022, at SMU, when Tank Dell (180), KeSean Carter (136) and Matthew Golden (105) did it. Those names still carry weight around the program. Thomas and Walker now share a sentence with them.
Next up: No. 10 Utah
No. 14 Houston (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) visits No. 10 Utah (6-0, 3-0) on Saturday night, with ESPN College GameDay live from Salt Lake City. Utah is unbeaten. Houston just showed it can score on anybody. Something has to give, and the Cougars will need Thomas and Walker to do it again.

The bottom line
Oklahoma State arrived ranked and left beaten by three. Games like that rarely turn on schemes. They turn on a man deciding that the ball is his, the yard is his and the moment is his. Thomas decided.
